Día de los Muertos is a day of celebration that combines traditions from ancient Aztec, Spanish and Mexican cultures. Each year on this day, we not only honor the passing of souls, but celebrate the part of the human experience that unites us all - death. In keeping with the spirit of unity and the human experience, this year we will celebrate and honor those before us with an officially proclaimed Day of Diversity & Inclusion Awareness throughout the city.
It is our belief that an inclusive and diverse culture creates the conditions to be our best selves. On this day, November 2nd 2022, we are promoting Diversity & INCLUSION through Día de los Muertos and a celebration of others.
Inclusion is not always presented to many individuals in our society; particularly People with Disabilities and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) - who instead of being valued for the diversity they bring, can often be perceived as “others” and excluded from opportunity.
While exclusion can take many faces- whether it be physical exclusion from space or societal exclusion from gathering - the result is often the same, a lack of accessibility. On this Day of Diversity & Inclusion, we ask ourselves: Where can we implement ‘big picture thinking’ that involves equal rights and equal opportunity? What can we do to foster increased inclusion to gain equity and promote diversity? How can we start the conversation for a more inclusive environment for all? Let's celebrate an inclusion of all into an equitable society. IT ALL STARTS WITH AWARENESS!
